Freebase vs Nic Salts
What Are They and When To Use Them
In the last few years the variety and assortment in e-juice has had an explosion in the industry. The abundance in options has been truly amazing, however this has created an atmosphere that can be overwhelming to most people. Being spoiled for selection can be intimidating, especially if you are just starting out.
WHAT IS FREEBASE?
Freebase Nicotine has been used in vaping since 2015. Nicotine in tobacco leaves takes the form of a salt in its natural state. Ammonia is used to remove protons from the nicotine salts to increase its pH level, thus making it more basic and putting it in a freebase state. It's then dissolved in a liquid base to create freebase nicotine as we know it.
Freebase nicotine however is not perfect. It does have its own problems, for instance the nicotine level has to be limited for most people using a sub-ohm tank, otherwise it can leave a harsh and intense hit. Since this was the only option available at the time most smokers were having a hard time coming off cigarettes as the level of nicotine could not replicate that in a cigarette.
WHAT ARE NIC SALTS?
The holy grail for most companies was to develop a smooth nicotine throat hit that would replicate the nicotine level in most cigarettes. In the quest for this, scientists dropped the pH level in nicotine, essentially going in the opposite direction of freebase pH.
This resulted in the nic salts that we know today. However it wasn’t the refined throat hit that was needed. To help create this sensation, scientist played around with the chemical composition and found that by simply adding benzoic acid it would result in the smooth hit they we’re searching for.
WHAT’S THE BEST CHOICE?
That’s the ultimate question. The answer is subjective as most MTL (mouth to lung) devices require salts while the majority of DL (direct lung) devices can only use freebase. People that most recently quit smoking prefer nic salts to freebase as they can get the most nicotine closest to cigarettes.
This also gets a little more complicated as companies are currently developing pod systems, coils and even liquids that can work in either set up. Here at Summit Vape Co. in Waterloo, Ontario we pride ourselves in working hard to ensure that we have the latest products and liquids that can work with both set ups and we are always bringing in new products make your experience with vaping the best it can be.
